Not since 1890, when the Dodger franchise was formed as a professional baseball organization has a Dodger team started the year perfect at home with a 10-0 record.

Part of the success at home has been patience at hitting, especially during the late innings; another has been the bullpen not allowing runs during the late innings. During two of the wins against San Diego has come in extra innings, with the Dodgers winning both of those games on a walk-in RBI by Russell Martin and an RBI single by Andre Ethier.

As mentioned, the bullpen has played a key role too in the winnng streak, with Ramon Troncoso pitching well, and Jonathan Broxton continue his outstanding work as a closer.

SO far, this trip has been awesome. Having met Rollie Fingers and Fergir Jenkins at the same table, along with Pete Lacock and George Foster was a great treat! Bob Brenly was also very nice when I met him...

I look forward to seeing some Dodger baseball and some old time Dodgers!

During the WBC yesterday, there was some discussion that the Dodgers would be wise to seek Pedro Martinez to round out their pitching staff. He's older (37 years) and a free agent this season, so he should be easily acquirable. And he could finish up his career with the team that launched his career.
But his ERA last season was over 5.00 in only 109 innings. His true value would be to help guide and mold the younger pitchers on the staff. While the Dodgers wouldn't need to let go of Kemp to get Pedro, he could fit into the pitching jigsaw puzzle and allow the Dodgers to try to use Kemp to acquire another big name pitcher later in the season.

I'd hate to see Pierre leave the Dodgers only to see a lackluster performance by Manny. I have a lot more confidence in Ethier and Kemp at this point than I do in Manny. But if Manny does in fact sign his contract, come July Pierre could be packing his bags. I'd hate to see him and his calf-high socks run the bases like Juan Pierre right out of Chavez Ravine.

Pitching is the most suspect part of the roster. Besides these pitchers, other pitchers have been invited to Spring training to compete for the fifth starting position. Eric Milton and Jeff Weaver are two players who were signed to compete for the fifth spot. Additionally, Jason Schmidt, who is now in the third year of his three year deal, will also be competing for the spot.

Weaver has indicated he may want to be a long reliever, similar to the position Chan Ho Park was in 2008. Since Mota was signed to be Broxton's setup guy, that may seem logical. But we shall see...

Even though the Dodgers signed Randy Wolf, the starting five is not an elite starting five. Prior to the trading deadline in July, the Dodgers may need to trade or sign a quality starting pitcher.
